Analysis of connector safety performance, high safety parameters are necessarily good?

In modern electronic device circuit systems, connectors play a crucial role. Its security performance is directly related to the safety of users' use. When choosing connectors, we often pay attention to three safety parameters: insulation resistance, voltage resistance, and flame retardant rating. But does this mean that the higher these parameters, the better?

1、 Insulation resistance: the influence of environmental factors
Insulation resistance refers to the resistance value presented by the leakage current generated inside or on the surface of the insulation part of a connector after applying voltage. This parameter is influenced by various factors such as insulation materials, temperature, humidity, and pollution. Usually, the insulation resistance value marked on the connector sample is the test result under standard atmospheric conditions. However, in practical applications, changes in environmental conditions may lead to a decrease in insulation resistance values. In addition, different test voltages can also affect the results of insulation resistance. Common test voltages include 10V, 100V, and 500V.

2、 Voltage endurance: the ability to withstand critical voltage
Voltage endurance refers to the critical voltage that a connector can withstand between its contact pairs or with the ground for a specified period of time, which is higher than the rated voltage without breakdown. This parameter is mainly affected by factors such as electrical clearance, creepage distance, geometric shape, insulation material, as well as environmental temperature, humidity, and atmospheric pressure.

3、 Flame retardancy: the key to preventing fires
Flame retardancy requires connectors to not only have the ability to prevent fire, but also to self extinguish in a short period of time in the event of a fire. This performance mainly depends on the plastic material used in the connector body. Connectors made of flame-retardant and self extinguishing insulation materials have superior flame-retardant performance.
Conclusion: Moderate rather than excessive

Although these safety parameters are crucial for the performance of the connector, it does not necessarily mean that higher parameters are better. The requirements for connector safety parameters vary in different application environments. Excessive pursuit of higher security parameters may lead to a waste of performance and price. Therefore, when purchasing connectors, it is recommended to communicate fully with manufacturers and select the most suitable connector products while ensuring compliance with safety performance requirements.
